The
First Cloth Diaper
Before

and Indian prefold clothe diapers were invented, there were flat
cloth diapers. Flat diapers are a single layer of fabric designed to
fold into the diaper shape around the baby. Chinese prefolds and
Indian prefolds are thicker in the middle while flat diapers do not
have a thicker center section. Instead, flat cloth diapers have the
same amount of thickness and layers throughout the entire diaper.
Flat diapers were the first diapers ever invented. Moms used flat
cloth diapers for hundreds of years before the invention of other
cloth diapers and disposables. Folding flat diapers to make sure they
are providing leak protection and comfort to the baby is sometimes
difficult. Once folded and comfortably wrapped around their baby,
many parents use pins to fasten the diaper to make sure it's secure.
Although they are the least expensive, flats do not always offer the
same absorbency as their pre-folded predecessor.

numbers in the identification show how many layers of fabric are on
the right and left side of the diaper, and the middle number shows
how many layers of cloth are in the center of the diaper. Different
quality of diapers will have a different number of layers. The
quality of diaper makes a difference as to how well they will work
and how long they will last. Diaper covers should be used with
pre-folded diapers.
Chinese
versus Indian
Chinese

and Indian prefolds are just as affordable as flat diapers.
Pre-folded diapers come in different varieties, fabrics, sizes and
weights. Chinese
prefold cloth diapers
are made from Chinese cotton. They are a hardier diaper, providing
more absorbency than Indian cloth diapers. They tend to pill more
than Indian cloth diapers and aren't quite as soft. Indian cloth
diapers are made from Indian cotton. They are soft and pill less than
Chinese prefolds. Other types of pre-folded diapers are made from
materials like birds-eye cotton, terry cloth, flannel or gauze
cotton, pre-folded diapers offer a variety of options in strengths
and absorbency. Both Indian and Chinese

are available in bleached and unbleached fabric options. Pre-folded
diapers aren't always plain white. Many feature design patterns
embroidered on the front or come in printed fabrics.
Hemp
Parents
who prefer a more natural fabric may choose to buy hemp fabric
diapers. There are many fabrics made from hemp including hemp fleece,
hemp jersey and even woven hemp muslin. Hemp is also more durable and
more absorbent than cotton, plus has a natural resistance to mold and
mildew. These features make using hemp more popular. Hemp cloth
diapers are a little more expensive than Chinese
