Cloth Diaper Covers

Cloth Diaper Covers

To a new parent, the many options in cloth diaper covers can quickly overwhelm a parent, leaving them wondering how they can ever determine what is the best choice for their family. Even if you can determine what types of diapers you might want to purchase, the cover brings entirely new options into play. In fact, there are a lot of differences when it comes to cloth diaper covers. By understanding each one, however, you can begin to determine what might work for your baby.

What Are All These Fabrics?

One of the first determinations to make when it comes to cloth diaper covers is what type of fabric you want to use. There are several common options when it comes to cover fabrics. Each has pros and cons. You may want to purchase one of each to determine what you prefer.

Polyurethane Laminate, or PUL, is the most common fabric used in cloth diaper covers and AIOs. PUL is comprised of a soft outer fabric that is coated with a flexible and waterproof plastic material. Most PUL diaper covers are available in colors, but some cloth diaper covers use printed PUL, which is a very fun option. PUL is thin, but durable- standing up to industrial washing routines. Some babies are sensitive to components used in the manufacturing process. It is also not as breathable as some other options.

Nylon is another common material used for cloth diaper covers. It is also quite thin. They are made with only one layer of material. Nylon covers are usually readily available in fun prints. Again, sensitive babies can react to nylon and it is less breathable.

For the ultimate in natural fibers, wool rules with eco-minded parents. Wool covers may be knitted as a pull-on cover, or made with a firmer weave, much like any other fitted cloth diaper covers. Wool is breathable and easy on sensitive skin. However, instead of being completely waterproof, it absorbs wetness, keeping it away from clothing and skin. If saturated, it can leak.

What About Styles?

After your fabric choice, you will be looking at the different styles in cloth diaper covers. Each has its advantages and you might want to purchase an assortment before determining your favorite.

Wrap style- A wrap style cover is the trimmest style of cloth diaper covers. It wraps around your diaper, fastening in the front. Most wraps close with hook and loop tape, but snap styles are also available. Wrap covers are necessary for tightly holding contour diapers when no other closure is being employed. They also are preferred for use with prefolds, but also work fantastic with any fitted diaper. Look for leg gussets for best performance.

Side-snap style- The other common type of cloth diaper covers feature closures, usually plastic snaps, that meet at your baby's hip. This style allows you to independently adjust the waist and leg fit, making it ideal for babies with chunky thighs. This style is bulkier than a wrap cover.

Pull-on style- While this type of cover has been available for decades, it has taken the back seat as more parent-friendly designs have been introduced. Pull on covers may still be ideal for some situations; for example, knitted wool pants, often known as "longies" or "shorties", favor this design.

As you can see, it's not hard to categorize the many different types of cloth diaper covers on the market today. If you have more questions, or want to purchase the best cloth diaper covers for your baby, Kelly's Closet is happy to help.
